Item:302921464732An excellent original early American c.1770 hand crafted slant front desk. The desk shows a large flip-down door or desktop and four large storage drawers. When the slant lid desk portion is in the horizontal position it will expose the stationary “pigeon hole” organizer which features ten various small drawers and nine cubbies. The drawers are finished with two decorative original bat-wing brass drop-handles each, with matching brass escutcheon key plates in the center. The piece shows a solid wood construction with a rich mahogany colored finish (cherry and mahogany woods with pine secondary. This truly is an original early American desk showing some alteration/reconstruction and refinishing. There is scattered wear on the piece from use, a broken chipped escutcheon on the main drop-door, missing handles on some of the small drawers, and one missing drop handle. There is no key present. The desk measures 38" wide, 20 1/2" deep, and 42" tall. The top drawer has had more restoration than the bottom three. A handsome, period 18th century slant front desk with period 18th century brasses. Great look, great small size! Great decorating piece. With the restorations, this is not for the purist, but it IS a true 18th century New England Chippendale desk that is all hand-made. Block front desks are very high style and represent the finest cabinetmaking in the 18th Century. Original back, feet, etc, which are usually the first things one finds are replaced on 18th century furniture. Price reduced for quick sale!
